Basic Safety training for Deckhands

Basic safety training for deckhands covers basic rules for safety at work, handling personal protective equipment, awareness of specific hazards of the vessel as a workplace and behaviour in emergency situations (fire, person overboard, etc.)

During this course, we will teach you the basic rules to act independently with regard to:

  • The use of rescue equipment to prevent drowning
  • The specific working conditions on board a vessel
  • Fire fighting on board a vessel.
  • Risks on board due to noise
  • Handling hazardous substances on board a vessel
  • First aid basics

The course complies with the Standards for Basic Safety Training for Deckhands set by CESNI (Decision: CESNI 2021-I-1) and Directive (EU) 2017/2397.

What can you do with it?

After completing the training, the participant receives a certificate recognised by the CBR. Based on this certificate and a valid medical examination, one can apply for a service booklet with the EU qualification ‘Deckhand’.
The participant also receives an Emergency Responce certificate.

What should I bring?

  • Valid proof of identity (Passport, Identity card, Driving licence)
  • Valid inland navigation examination certificate
  • Dry underwear

You do not need any specific knowledge to join the course. Minimum age is 16 years.

We recommend having an inland navigation examination beforehand. The inland navigation examination can also be arranged with our doctor at our location during the course.

Certificates:
You will receive basic safety training for deckhands set by CESNI certificate.
In addition to the CBR-recognised certificate, the participant will also receive an Emergency Response certificate upon completion.

Course times:
On the first day, participants are expected at 07.45 for registration. Training starts at 08:30 and will end around 16:30.

Price:
The above price includes registration fees, the use of practical materials, teaching materials, lunch, coffee and tea. Please note that the listed price does not include VAT.

Language:
The training will be delivered in Dutch as standard. If only English-speaking trainees participate, instruction can be provided in English. Upon request, the training can be organised for groups in another language. It is possible to hire an interpreter via STC NEXT.
